Read the full story here: A world-class dining experience shaped by the Japanese concept of Yugen
The name of the restaurant, Yugen, means ‘a profound sense of the beauty of the universe.’ In response, the design sought to capture its own underground universe by embodying the elements of the world - fire, water, earth and wind in a sensory customer journey. Yugen’s design began as a two-story, basement carpark. The adaptive reuse of this project created the greatest opportunity to reimagine the dramatic spatial volumes in its subterranean context. The 700m2 venue contains 4 distinct dining experiences, the downstairs cocktail bar and restaurant, the mezzanine Omakase bar and the gold dining orb for VIP experiences. Each of these experiences use light and texture to represent the elements of the world. As guests journey down into the basement, the intense golden glow Yugen is bathed in, is exquisitely countered by the custom, ceramic chandelier that dances above the cocktail bar.
The places we design play host to the scope of human existence in all of its beautiful, messy and extraordinary glory.
