A Step-by-Step Guide on How to Buy a Fireplace

1. Define Your Purpose and Priorities

Start by asking yourself what role the fireplace will play in your home. Is it primarily a heat source for cold Melbourne winters, or more of an architectural statement piece that doubles as a secondary heat source? Perhaps you want both.

Your answer shapes everything that follows, from fuel type to placement to budget. A freestanding sculptural fireplace makes a dramatic centrepiece in an open-plan living area, while a built-in model might complement a minimalist renovation beautifully.

2. Choose Your Fuel Type

This decision influences installation requirements, running costs, and the overall ambience your fireplace creates.

Wood fireplaces offer the most authentic experience – the scent of burning timber and crackling sounds, the ritual of building a fire, and exceptional radiant heat. They suit homes with existing flues or new builds, where adequate venting can be incorporated from the start. Modern wood heaters must meet Australian Standard for emissions, ensuring cleaner burning than older models.

Gas fireplaces deliver instant atmosphere and warmth at the touch of a button. They’re ideal for busy households who want ambience without the work associated with a wood fire. They work brilliantly in both traditional and contemporary settings and are also better suited to apartments and commercial buildings . You’ll need access to natural gas or LPG.

Electric fireplaces offer the greatest installation flexibility – no flue or gas connection, just a power point. Today’s premium holographic models feature remarkably realistic flame technology and can operate year-round with or without heat. They’re perfect for apartments, heritage properties with restrictions, or simply adding a secondary fireplace to a bedroom or study.

Bioethanol fireplaces provide a modern, design-focused heating solution that burns bioethanol, a clean renewable fuel, without the need for a flue or chimney. They produce real flames and gentle radiant heat while emitting no smoke, ash, or soot. Bioethanol fireplaces are easy to install and increasingly popular in contemporary homes where architectural freedom and visual impact are priorities.

3. Assess Your Space and Requirements

Consider the room’s dimensions, ceiling height, and insulation quality. A large open-plan area needs a fireplace with sufficient heating capacity (measured in kilowatts), while a smaller space might benefit from a more compact unit.

Think about placement, too. Will it sit against a wall, in a corner, or perhaps as a double-sided feature between two rooms? Each configuration has different structural and venting implications.

4. Consider Style and Integration

Your fireplace should feel integral to your home’s architecture, not like an afterthought. Consider the surrounding materials (stone, timber, steel, or rendered finishes) and how the fireplace’s proportions fit within your room.

For new builds and major renovations, involve your fireplace specialist early in the design process. This ensures proper structural allowances, flue placement, and seamless integration with joinery and finishes.

5. Work with Specialists

A premium fireplace is a significant investment that deserves expert guidance. Specialist consultants can assess your space, explain compliance requirements, and recommend models that match both your aesthetic vision and practical needs.

Professional installation is also crucial for safety. Australian standards govern clearances, venting, and fire safety, and certified installers ensure your fireplace meets all regulatory requirements.

6. Plan for the Long Term

Quality fireplaces, properly maintained, provide decades of enjoyment and add genuine value to your home. Factor in ongoing requirements like annual servicing for gas units or chimney sweeping for wood burners.

Buying a fireplace is one of those rare decisions where practicality and pleasure align perfectly. When you choose thoughtfully, you’ll create a space that draws people in, season after season.
