Intumescent coatings serve as a vital passive fire protection measure and are crucial for safety in modern building, construction, and asset protection projects. Dulux® Protective Coatings provides an extensive selection of intumescent coatings to meet diverse project needs. Whether it's on-site applied water-based products or off-site applied epoxy coatings, Dulux Protective Coatings offer an ideal solution.

These intumescent coatings safeguard structural steel during a fire. Steel loses its load-bearing capacity when its temperature exceeds 550ºC, but with an intumescent coating, the structural stability of the steel is better maintained in the event of fire.

Choosing the right intumescent coating is essential for both the construction phase and the end-use environment.

Dulux® FIRETEX®

The Dulux FIRETEX® series includes coatings that offer between 60 and 120 minutes of cellulosic fire protection. These coatings are suitable for environments with atmospheric corrosivity levels ranging from C1 to C5, as specified in AS/NZS 2312.1:2014. The range encompasses choices for both interior and exterior applications, and they can be applied either on-site or in a shop environment. Additionally, the selection includes water-based, solvent-based, and solventless, ultra-high-build, epoxy intumescent coating variants.

Proven and tested fire protection coatings systems

One of the primary benefits of partnering with Dulux Protective Coatings is our ability to deliver a comprehensive coatings system that includes fire protection.

In addition to the intumescent coatings, we offer primers and topcoats that have been rigorously tested to function cohesively in the event of a fire. Our extensive range of intumescent solutions is designed to meet the specific requirements of each individual project.

Getting intumescent coatings right

Philip Vodanovich, the National Commercial Manager for Protective Coatings at Dulux Protective Coatings, says, “Our range of intumescent coatings sets new standards in efficiency and effectiveness. Some of these products are designed for off-site application and can be recoated or handled within an hour, greatly enhancing efficiency.”

The DuluxFIRETEX® range of intumescent products supports both off-site and on-site application. Applying intumescent coatings off-site marks, a significant industry change with many steel fabricators now utilising the durability benefits of the FIRETEX®Platinum epoxy coatings to deliver project efficiencies with pre-coated steel delivered directly to site.

It also reduces many safety risks linked to on-site applications, as a controlled workshop environment is easier to manage.

It is always advisable to work with trained applicators who have the right experience and equipment to apply intumescent coatings.

Philip Vodanovich emphasises that asset owners and specifiers should not only review the data sheets and ensure proper application but also reach out to the Dulux Protective Coatings specialist team. This collaboration allows them to receive expert advice on product selection and quantity calculation for their project. By working with the team, customers can successfully achieve the required finish, corrosion protection, and durability, while also incorporating fire protection.
