Elevating Homes with Decorative Concrete

“Some of the most popular decorative concrete trends right now include colour and acid etch finishes and exposed decorative stone. These finishes offer both style and functionality, creating a unique texture to the surface,” explains Ryan. While classic shades like black and charcoal remain popular, clients are opting for uniqueness through a wide range of colours, from subtle to bold tints in their decorative concrete, adding an element of personalisation and character that enhances the overall aesthetic of their spaces and makes each design truly one-of-a-kind.

“Clients are really thinking about how their concrete can complement the home’s overall aesthetic, and colour has become an essential part of that,” says Siobhan.

When it comes to innovative decorative concrete techniques, Concrete Unlimited has fully embraced creativity.

“We love mixing different finishes and textures as well as embracing creativity through colour contrast and inserts like exposed concrete and acid etching,” shares Ryan. "We also love creating different patterns and designs, turning traditional home features such as driveways into something that reflects our client's personality."

Here are a few ways that you can elevate your spaces with decorative concrete:

1. Glow Stones

A technique rarely seen in New Zealand, the Old Coach Road Project became an industry favourite thanks to its innovative use of glow stones, earning the Highly Commended Residential Award at the 2023 NZ Concrete Contractors Association Awards. Glow stones are an excellent way to elevate any space, from pool surrounds to interior floors. Self-charging by natural sunlight during the day, they emit a soft, ambient glow at night, creating a captivating visual effect.

2. LED-Lit Steps

Another innovative idea for your outdoor area is led-lit steps for your home's exterior. Concrete Unlimited's Cable Bay Project is the perfect example of this, winning the 'Best Residential Award' for 2024. LED-lit steps are a stunning way to enhance your home’s exterior, offering both practicality and style. This innovative feature not only improves safety by illuminating pathways and stairs but also adds a modern, elegant touch to your outdoor spaces. With energy-efficient lighting and customisable designs, LED-lit steps create a warm and inviting ambience while elevating your exterior’s overall aesthetic appeal.

3. Decorative Concrete
