An appointment-only facility lets architects, designers and the trades see working fireplaces and installations up close.

New Zealand fireplace manufacturer Escea has opened a dedicated Training & Selection Centre on the outskirts of Melbourne, created for the architects, designers, developers, builders, gasfitters and installers who specify and install its fireplaces.

The centre is a working space rather than a showroom. For specifiers, seeing a fireplace in person before it goes on a drawing offers a level of understanding, and reassurance, that a brochure or product photo can’t. Finish, scale, craftsmanship and flame behaviour can be studied up close and compared side by side.

Most of the models on display are fully working installations, including Escea’s latest releases, with examples shown behind the wall so visitors can see how each one is installed and how it operates.

The centre also hosts CPD presentations on a range of topics, allowing visiting architects and designers to earn points while viewing the range in person. Other visitors bring a specific project to discuss, or a handful of product questions, with sessions tailored to each visitor’s needs.

“Specifying a fireplace from a brochure is one thing – standing in front of the exact working model is another,” said Mark Daffy, Escea’s Melbourne-based architectural advisor. “You can see precisely what you’re putting into a project before it’s locked in.”

For gasfitters and installers, sessions can cover clearances, flue configurations and installation detail on a working fireplace, with Escea’s advisory team on hand throughout.

“For the people actually putting these in – builders, gasfitters, installers – there’s no substitute for seeing an installation with the wall open,” said Julian Terry, Escea’s construction advisor. “It answers questions in real time that a spec sheet can’t.”

Visits are by appointment, individually or in a group. Escea arranges transport to and from the centre for guests travelling from the city, and provides refreshments on arrival.
