Escea’s new fireplace challenges what electric flame can be

Escea’s new LR Series takes a different approach to electric flame, using patent-pending holographic technology to create an uninterrupted ribbon of fire.

Electric fireplaces have often been designed around the visual language of traditional fire. Escea’s new LR Series takes a different direction, stripping the fireplace back to a pure, uninterrupted ribbon of holographic flame over crushed black glass.

Developed and crafted in New Zealand, the LR Series uses holographic projection technology to reproduce the movement, colour and depth of real flame. Escea developed the technology by recording actual gas and ethanol fires, capturing their behaviour before translating it into the fireplace. Reflective side panels extend the flame visually across the firebox, while the black crushed glass adds contrast and subtle reflections.

The thinking behind the development is perhaps best captured by Owen Clements, Electric Engineering Manager at Escea:

“The LR Series is genuinely the first of its kind – there is no other holographic fireplace producing a pure continuous ribbon of flame in this form. We’ve created a new category, and in doing so, defied what people thought was possible for electric fireplaces.”

The technology is patent pending, and the LR Series has been named a finalist in the 2026 NZ Best Design Awards, recognising the development as something beyond a conventional electric fireplace.

Building on the LE Series, Escea’s earlier range of holographic electric fireplaces featuring Flame-Map technology for a realistic wood-fire experience, the LR Series takes the concept further with its continuous linear flame. The result is a more pared-back composition in which the flame itself becomes the visual focus.

That distinction is particularly relevant to contemporary apartments and multi-residential projects. As Richard Miller, Architectural Advisor at Escea, explains:

“It genuinely looks like a modern ethanol or gas fire – that’s the reaction we get every time. For the apartment and multi-res market, where people have wanted that aesthetic but couldn’t always make it work, the LR Series is a game-changer.”

The range is available in four inbuilt sizes, alongside freestanding options, with four flame styles and a flame-only mode. Its Zero Clearance rating also allows surrounds in materials including timber, stone and joinery, while no flue, vents or building consent are required.

For contemporary interiors, the LR Series offers a different way to consider the fireplace: not as a recreation of a traditional fire, but as a piece of architectural technology built around the visual character of flame.
