Elevate your bedroom with Halcyon Reading Spots. Recessed or surface mount, Halcyon Lighting has a range of considered luminaires bringing low glare illumination exactly where it is needed.
Most bedrooms still solve reading with a lamp on the nightstand. It works, up to a point. But a shaded lamp throws light in every direction it can find, including across the other half of the bed. And importantly, it takes up space the book, the glass of water and the phone are already competing for. A dedicated reading spot does the same job without any of that, provided it is specified properly. Good reading light comes down to three things: where it sits, how tight the beam is, and how well the light source is hidden.
The task is much smaller than people assume
A page is roughly A4, held around 400mm to 500mm from the eye, and tilted rather than flat. That is the whole target. It wants somewhere between 300 and 500 lux, which is the same order of light as a kitchen benchtop, delivered into an area smaller than a placemat. So the job is a small, bright, sharply contained pool with everything around it left alone. That is a description of beam control rather than output, and it explains why a 3W fitting in the right position will beat a 60W lamp in the wrong one.
Getting the position right
Light has to arrive past the shoulder rather than over the head. Mount a luminaire directly above someone sitting up in bed and their own head and the top of the book end up between the light and the page. Aim for roughly 500mm to 700mm above the top of the mattress, which usually lands somewhere between 1100mm and 1300mm above finished floor level. Go higher and the beam starts skimming the top of the head. Go lower and the reader may have to sit forward to find the light.
And for the offset? Around 200mm to 300mm outboard of the shoulder line, toward the edge of the bed rather than the middle. The beam then crosses the shoulder diagonally onto the page and travels away from whoever is trying to sleep. Check both figures against the bed that is actually going in, not the one on the furniture plan. A deep upholstered headboard, a pile of four pillows, or a bed pushed into a window reveal will each move the reading position.

A wide optic at close range lights the page, the pillow, the wall behind, the ceiling and your partner in more or less equal measure. At that point the fitting has stopped being a reading light and becomes a standard wall light. Something narrower in the region of 24 degrees gives a defined pool at reading distance and falls away quickly outside it. One side of the bed stays awake, the other side stays dark.
The Capsule Mini reading spot was built to exactly this brief, at 3W and 24 degrees, in a body small enough to sit quietly against a headboard or a wall lining. It comes in white, black, corten, light bronze and dark bronze, with or without an integral switch.
Glare
Almost every other task light in a home points at a surface the user is looking down at. A reading light is different. It sits close to eye level, and the person under it glances up from the page every few minutes to talk, reach for a drink etc. That makes cut off performance the specification that separates a considered reading spot from a cheap one. The light source needs to sit back inside the body far enough that at any ordinary viewing angle you see a lit page rather than a bright dot.
The extra low glare adjustable reading spot is the one to reach for when the reading position sits close to a wall, or when there is a mirror, a glazed print or a window in the sightline opposite the bed.

Bedrooms move around. Pillows get replaced with taller pillows and the occupants can change too. Adjustability is key. A spot head with tilt, flip and rotate lets someone correct the beam on the fly. In guest rooms, holiday homes and anything hospitality related it is close to essential, because the occupant can be different week to week.
Reading happens outside the bedroom too
Window seats, a chair in a corner, a hallway nook, the good end of a sofa. Same activity, but likely with a different geometry. Here the light source usually sits further from the page, on the wall behind the chair or on the ceiling above and slightly forward of it, and it needs more output and a controlled beam to cover that distance without spilling into the rest of the room.
A surface mounted tube spot suits this well. Eight watts, a directional beam, a dimmable driver, and a form that reads as part of the architecture rather than as a bedroom accessory.
Switching, dimming and colour
Integral switching lets each side of the bed work independently without running a second circuit. Where the control is being handled elsewhere e.g. with home automation systems or similar, Halcyon also sells switch free options.
Dim it as well. A reading spot at full output is about right at nine o'clock and too much at midnight. Worth noting that these are very low load fittings, and a 3W or 4W head sitting on a dimmer sized for a lighting circuit will often fall below the minimum load of either the driver or the dimmer. Confirm the minimum load of the dimmer before you specify, particularly where a single reading spot is the only thing on its circuit.
Keep the colour temperature warm. Halcyon reading spots are commonly 3000K, which sits comfortably alongside warm white lighting in most New Zealand bedrooms.
Recessed or surface mount?
Surface mount is the practical choice in a finished house or a new build. The fittings are small, the finishes can be matched to door hardware or joinery, and nothing has to be resolved before the linings go on. Recessing into a wall, a headboard or a joinery return gives the cleanest result and leaves the least room for error. It has to be set out with the electrician at framing stage, with the reading position, the mounting height and the driver location agreed before anything is closed in.
Checklist
Light the page, not the bed.
Mount 500mm to 700mm above the mattress, 200mm to 300mm outboard of the shoulder.
Choose a low glare / narrow optic, around 24 degrees.
Specify an adjustable fitting anywhere the furniture or the occupant is likely to change.
Switch at the fitting where possible.
Check the dimmer and driver minimum load before committing.
Match the reading light to the colour temperature of the rest of the room.
