Why Sheer Curtains Are So Popular in NZ Homes

Sheer curtains have become the go‑to window dressing in New Zealand because they soften strong sunlight while keeping interiors bright and open. They are particularly well suited to Auckland’s light‑filled living areas and open‑plan layouts, where homeowners want privacy without heavy, dark window coverings—and in winter, that soft daylight becomes even more important as days get shorter.

Redgraves creates made‑to‑measure sheer curtains that fall beautifully and work seamlessly with your architecture, from coastal homes to city apartments. Every curtain is custom measured, sewn and installed by specialists so you get a perfect fit, a refined finish and the option to layer for extra insulation when the temperature drops.

Benefits of Sheer Curtains for NZ Light and Climate

New Zealand’s high UV levels and strong sun mean glare control and daylight diffusion are essential, especially in rooms with large windows or sliders. Sheer curtains filter light and help protect furnishings from fading while still preserving a sense of openness and connection to the outdoors.

Layering sheer curtains with custom roller blinds and Roman blinds gives you extra privacy, blockout and warmth when you need it, without losing that soft, airy look during the day. This combination is ideal for bedrooms, media rooms and west‑facing living areas where flexible light control and better thermal performance are important—particularly in autumn and winter

Best Sheer Curtain Styles for Modern NZ Interiors

Contemporary New Zealand homes tend to favour full‑length, floor‑skimming sheers in neutral tones like white, ivory and warm greys. Simple headings such as S‑fold or wave pleats create a smooth, continuous line of fabric that feels relaxed yet polished, complementing everything from minimalist interiors to soft coastal schemes.

Redgraves’ custom curtains are available in a curated range of sheer fabrics, from linen and linen‑look to voile and soft textured weaves. These fabrics pair beautifully with timber floors, rendered finishes and white walls that are common in Auckland homes, and can be specified in different weights to suit both summer light and cooler‑season comfort.

Layering Sheer Curtains with Blinds and Shutters

One of the strongest trends in NZ window dressing is layering sheer curtains with discreet blinds or shutters for more control, insulation and year‑round comfort. Sheers provide daytime softness and privacy, while blockout blinds, lined curtains or plantation shutters give you full darkness and noticeably improved insulation at night or in high‑glare conditions.

Redgraves designs coordinated schemes that combine sheer curtains with custom blinds or shutters, so your windows feel cohesive from every angle. In winter‑cool living rooms and bedrooms, a triple solution—sheer curtains for daytime softness, plus blockout blinds or lined curtains drawn at dusk—helps reduce heat loss through large areas of glass while keeping the interior calm and inviting

Choosing the Right Fabric, Colour, and Hardware

For a timeless look, many New Zealand homeowners choose soft, natural tones that complement their existing colour palette instead of competing with it. Light‑filtering sheers in off‑white, oatmeal or pale stone create a calm backdrop that works across coastal, contemporary and classic interiors.

The Redgraves showroom and Textile Gallery showcase premium fabrics from global designers, allowing you to see how different textures and densities behave in real light across seasons. Discreet tracks and hardware are then specified to keep the focus on the fabric and architecture, achieving a clean line at the window whether the treatment is a single layer of sheers or a fully layered system

Professional Measure, Making, and Installation

Getting sheer curtains right involves more than choosing a beautiful fabric; correct measuring, fullness and installation are critical to the final result and to how well the treatment performs over time. Redgraves offers complimentary in‑home consultations across Auckland, where an experienced consultant measures, discusses style, seasonal comfort and function, and recommends the best solutions for each room.

All curtains, blinds and shutters are then professionally installed by Redgraves’ own installers to ensure they hang correctly, operate smoothly and stand up to everyday use. This full‑service approach gives you confidence that your sheer curtains will look beautiful and work effectively—whether you are chasing summer breezes or closing everything up for a cosy winter’s night

Where Redgraves Installs Sheer Curtains in Auckland
