What is Corten Steel?

For those unfamiliar, COR-TEN® or Corten steel is a weathering steel that undergoes a natural oxidation process, evolving from orange to rich red hues before stabilizing. Unlike other steels, its corrosion-resistant properties make it a long-lasting material ideal for the outdoors. Its rust-like finish lends a warm, earthy character, making it an excellent fit for Australia’s distinctive landscape.

“It’s often used for areas that are difficult to access for maintenance because the beauty of Corten is that you don’t have to do anything to it,” says Secret Gardens Creative Director Matt Cantwell.

From a maintenance perspective, it is quite strong and it’s meant to age gracefully. Its natural, earthy appeal has made it increasingly popular.

A Perfect Match for Australian Landscapes

The resurgence of native and endemic plant choices has further cemented Corten steel’s role in contemporary garden design. Its compatibility with natural materials such as stone, concrete, and timber creates a harmonious balance that feels at home in the Australian environment.

“It fits so well with the natural colour palette and our flora,” says Matt. “We’re embracing a love for textures and materials that reflect our landscape, and Corten steel is the perfect partner.”
