Concealed 3D hinges and hydraulic pivots are expanding the possibilities for door designs, offering architects and designers the freedom to achieve seamless, high-performance spaces.

In contemporary architecture, it's the unseen details that often speak the loudest. Nowhere is this more evident than in the subtle genius of concealed door hardware, specifically, 3D hinges and adjustable pivot systems. The latest innovations in hinges and pivots are empowering architects and designers to realise larger, cleaner, and more expressive door solutions than ever before.

To understand how this technology is impacting interior design, we spoke with Marcel Eikenaar, Managing Director of  Mardeco, who shares how high-level engineering is expanding what's possible in door hardware.

“Design trends are favouring seamless, minimalistic environments with hidden hardware and clean lines,” says Marcel.

This rising preference for clarity and cohesion in door hardware design has seen concealed door hardware like JNF’s Coplan 3D hinges and hydraulic pivots gain momentum, both for its functionality and visual discretion

“The Coplan hinge, when closed, is invisible—preserving wall continuity—while JNF hydraulic pivots offer concealed operation with just a 25mm visible floor plate,” Marcel explains. “These systems support oversized, full-height, or frameless doors, making them ideal for contemporary interiors prioritising both visual simplicity and performance.”

For a seamless look, Mardeco's 3D hinges and door pivots offer design precision.

3D hinges: Precision as standard

So, what exactly sets 3D hinges apart from the standard? It’s all in the detail.

“JNF Coplan 3D hinges offer adjustment in three axes: ±3mm lateral, ±3mm depth, and ±3mm height, allowing precise door alignment during or after installation,” shares Marcel.

Their adjustability makes life easier not just for installers, but also for designers wanting tight alignment and perfect finishes. There’s no need to remove the door to make adjustments later: a major win in both commercial and residential projects.

“Our Coplan 3D hinges, for example, are tested to 200,000 cycles, support door weights up to 120kg per pair, and allow doors to open up to 120°,” says Marcel.

It’s not just about durability,  though, it’s also about maintaining that high-end look over time.

“Made of die-cast zinc alloy with an epoxy coating, they resist oxidation and scratches, ensuring long-term performance even in demanding environments,” he says.

The pivot to clean, structural simplicity

Pivot systems offer even more freedom for designers wanting to make a bold statement, or keep things elegantly understated.

“JNF hydraulic pivot systems like the IN.05.204 are mortised into the top and bottom of the door, requiring no floor excavation, and can support doors up to 100kg,” Marcel says. “They use cam-based hydraulic dampers to ensure controlled, self-closing action.”

This approach allows for larger and more sculptural doors without the technical compromises of traditional hinges. And for even heavier doors?

“Mardeco’s JNF hydraulic pivots, such as the IN.05.215, can be installed in doors up to 350kg and up to 4m high, with a 120° opening angle.”

What’s remarkable, though, is how subtle the visible components remain.

“The concealed mechanism is integrated into the door itself, with a minimalist visible floor and ceiling plate,” says Marcel.

Combined with finish options like stainless steel or PVD, these pivots offer the freedom to maintain a clean architectural look while delivering excellent mechanical performance.

Supporting contemporary design goals

While aesthetics play a key role, flexibility is just as important.

“Available in single-action (90° swing in one direction) and double-action (both directions), [pivots] support flexible layouts without visual clutter,” says Marcel.

There are plenty of configurations to choose from, including hold-open or non-hold-open models (depending on how the space will be used).

To enable design flexibility, clear communication early in the design process is crucial.

“Knowing door weight, thickness, and opening style (single or double action) are critical,” Marcel advises. “Pivots may require floor or ceiling reinforcement, particularly for heavier or double-action doors.”

For peace of mind, Mardeco helps clients navigate all of these decisions. And to back it all up?

“Mardeco offers technical drawings, BIM objects, and support to ensure correct installation and specification of JNF products.”

Function equals form

Even if the hardware isn’t visible, its role in the overall design experience is undeniable.

“Poorly chosen hardware often leads to door sag, misalignment, and maintenance issues,” shares Marcel.

That’s why Mardeco’s solutions are engineered for performance from the inside out.

“JNF hydraulic pivots use high-performance bronze bearings, cam-return mechanisms, and soft-close hydraulic dampers for smooth, low-resistance movement, even under frequent use.”

And thanks to 3D adjustability, even the hinges contribute to long-term design integrity.

“Coplan hinges, with 3D adjustability, maintain perfect alignment over time, reducing wear on the frame and hinge points.”

A subtle power move

While some might assume this kind of hardware is only for the most high-end builds, that’s not necessarily the case.

“Some believe these systems are only suited for high-end or complex builds, but JNF concealed hinges and pivots are versatile, cost-effective over time, and easy to install when specified early.”

And just as importantly, choosing the right configuration matters.

“Mardeco offers both single- and double-action JNF models, and choosing the wrong one can affect user flow, safety, and compliance.”

When thought through carefully and implemented correctly, 3D hinges and hydraulic pivots offer more than structural support, they become an integral part of the architectural language.

In spaces where elegance and precision matter, these elements deliver both beauty and function, quietly, confidently, and without compromise.
