Tile sizes are evolving for a cleaner aesthetic

One of the biggest interior design trends of late has been a move towards clean and contemporary interiors, often with an industrial edge. So it’s not surprising larger module tiles ranging from 1000x1000mm to 1200x2400mm are proving popular. Aside from the practicality, large format tiles also come with several aesthetic advantages. Thanks to the advances in digital printing, tiles can bring the look of almost any material creating a contemporary look throughout, including natural stone, concrete, metal, identical wood-look and even fabrics.

Tiles are also increasing in popularity for living areas as awareness grows of sustainable living. At any size, it’s a well known fact that tiles are one of the lowest carbon emission options in flooring. Because of the base nature of the product – clay – tiles contain none of the chemicals that have been in the news associated with other flooring products and health issues. They are also long-lasting, low maintenance, and slip-resistant. Perhaps, most importantly from a sustainability point of view, they are free of VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds). Specifiers are oftentimes required to build to environmental standards so it’s not surprising flooring tiles are chosen for their sustainable characteristics.

Thanks to their versatility, large format tile can be installed seamlessly throughout a home from kitchen to lounge, hallway and bathrooms and flow into exterior spaces. It's also a myth that large scale tiles shouldn't or can't be used in more compact rooms such as powder rooms and en suites. In fact, these spaces are perfect for them as using oversized tiles in a small area tricks the eye into thinking the room is much bigger than it really is. This helps to create a sense of scale where it doesn't naturally exist.
