Trust and Transparency: The Growing Importance of Verified Timber Sourcing

Understanding the Scale of the Problem

A recent verification trial by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry has revealed that approximately 25% of tested timber products had potentially misleading species and origin claims. This alarming statistic underscores a global challenge: between 15 and 30 percent of all timber traded globally is potentially illegally logged, with an estimated 10 percent of timber in the Australian market potentially coming from illegal sources.

Why Source Verification Matters

For end users – whether they're architects, builders, or homeowners – the authenticity of timber products isn't just about quality; it's about trust and responsibility. When you specify or purchase timber products, you need confidence that you're getting exactly what you've paid for, from the species to the origin.

Department acting director Madeleine Osborn emphasizes that illegal logging remains "one of the most profitable trans-border environmental crimes in the world," with devastating impacts on climate, nature, and people. This reinforces why proper sourcing and verification are crucial.
