Our Australian and Fijian Hardwood Decking is available in standard sizes of 140mm x 21mm, 135mm x 20mm and 90mm x 20mm. All of our deckings are non tropical rainforest–certified sustainable hardwood. We offer both new and reclaimed hardwood timbers for all residential and commercial applications including a dome-top (cambered) at no extra charge.
Our typical species for hardwood decking are Grey and Red Iron Bark, Turpentine, Spotted Gum, Tallowwood and Fijian White Mahogany. Our decking timbers are kiln dried to between 9 and 14% moisture to meet New Zealand's environmental requirements. Our Australian hardwoods are all class 1 timbers (40 years plus natural durability) and Fijian White Mahogany is class 2 durability – the same as the likes of Kwila, Garapa.
SUSTAINABILITY! The majority of New Zealand’s hardwood decking industry utilises tropical rainforest timbers such as Kwila, Garapa, Vitex, and Purple Heart to name a few. “50% of the world's tropical rainforest have been devastated in the last 40 years” – quoted by David Attenborough so the next time you look to purchase some hardwood decking, instead of being price conscious, maybe you can be environmentally conscious instead.
Fijian White Mahogany for example was planted by the British in the 1960s as a sustainable plantation and is now managed by the Fijian Government so we have clear visibility and trail from seed to site.
Installation: It is very important to have ventilation- free-air circulation under the decking which will help to minimise cupping and warping. This allows moisture content levels between the top face and the underside of boards to be reduced and extends the life and performance of your hardwood deck.
We recommend that your substructure for the deck should have at least 250mm – 300mm clearance from the ground in conjunction with suitable board spacing. This will allow for adequate ventilation. Machine coating of all 4 sides of the decking is also highly recommended.
For Fijian Mahogany, a damp-proof course membrane is required for any timber deck closer than one metre to the ground.
Hardwood Deck Spacing: Joist spacing of 450mm is recommended for 20mm thick decking.
Screws should penetrate at least 35mm-40mm into the joists to achieve good bearing. Nails or screws can be used.
Pre-drilling is a must for nails whilst our Wurth 50mm self-tapping screws are an excellent option except for when less than 60mm from the edge of the decking board where pre-drilling is advised.
Our Australian hardwood decking should be spaced with a minimum 8mm gap between decking boards. This will allow for some expansion & contraction as the decking boards acclimatise as well as allow for drainage of surface water and good air circulation.
Cross-flow ventilation is also required to ensure that the decking has adequate airflow to vent the boards from all sides.
Note: Around New Zealand, there are different climatic zones and timber will always react to the environment it is going into. Please contact if you have any specific questions about your decking project and the region in New Zealand you are building.
Coating: To help minimise any surface checking, cupping and maintain our hardwood's incredible grain / aesthetic look, we recommend coating the decking boards on all four sides with Intergrains Natures Oil, a penetrating oil by Dulux prior to installation. We offer this as a machine coat straight from our mill in Brisbane so you can simply lay the timber once it is received onsite. After 5-6 weeks of weathering, an additional face coat following installation is also recommended.
Please Note: When cutting our decking timbers, oiling the ends of the board will help to minimise splitting, cupping and checking on the ends of the boards – especially on 45-degree mitre cuts. It is preferable that once oiled these corners are also screwed together.
Fixings: We strongly recommend the use of Wurths self-trapping (pre-drilling is recommended and is a must with Fijian Mahogany) stainless steel screws (copper colour screws available also) for fixing your decking to the subframe. We recommend 50-60mm long screws through our 20mm decking board, two screws per joist.
Maintenance:
Please Note: Always follow the manufacturer’s specification for re-coating. Again we recommend products by Dulux’s Intergrain Penetrating Oil Range.
Passionate about sustainability, LMA Timber offers a superior selection of hardwood products tailored for the construction industry. We have collaborated carefully selected Australian Hardwood suppliers in Australia, all recipients of numerous awards for their commitment to delivering high-quality reclaimed and sustainable timber.
Established in 2017, our business originated from inspiration drawn from a Grand Designs episode featuring reclaimed Australian hardwood cladding. A subsequent investigation revealed that the main timber cladding options in New Zealand primarily consisted of high-maintenance softwoods (class 2 – 15 to 40 years naturally durable), such as cedar, larch, and thermally modified products. The discovered hardwood, distinguished by its superior performance, durability, low maintenance, and sustainable attributes, marked the beginning of our success story. Today, architects, designers, and builders widely regard it as their number one choice for not only cladding but structural beams, posts, decking, flooring amongst other hardwood products.
In October 2019 when LMA Timber joined forces with the Caldwell Group (AKA Trade Co), owners of ITM Dyers Road, VIP Frame and Truss amongst other businesses. With a combined experience of 40 years, this partnership enhances our market position, allowing us to provide unparalleled value and service to our customers. Regarded as being the largest and most trusted supplier of reclaimed / sustainably sourced Australian hardwoods, our reputation is firmly enforced by the prestigious projects we have been involved with around New Zealand
Our main warehouse along with purpose built showroom is based in Christchurch. This allows us to carry large volumes of stock (particularly cladding and decking) so that we can meet your projects needs in a timely fashion. Our second purpose built showroom is currently under construction and will be opened towards the end of April 2024. Additionally, we share a showroom in Auckland with High Performer Building where a sample of our products can also be viewed.
