A gable pergola uses two roof planes meeting at a central ridge. The taller centre and clearly expressed roof volume can help a covered area feel like an outdoor room or pavilion rather than a simple deck cover.

Ridge height, eave height, gable ends and the relationship to the existing roof are proportioned around the measured house and outdoor area. Fixed roofing can use acrylic, solid or combined zones, while gable ends can remain open or use considered slatted or acrylic treatments. Lighting, blinds and ceiling details can also be coordinated where they form part of the project.

At the Warkworth Outdoor Room, a freestanding gable allowed the deck, fireplace, clear acrylic glazing, cedar ceiling and lighting to be planned as one complete space.
