About us
We aim to produce humanist architecture comprised of stimulating and inspirational spaces and places.
We are a design-based practice that believes in providing tailor-made solutions to an individual client's needs. The fundamental objective of the practice is to develop architecture that is appropriate to its specific site, wider context and intended use while being robust, flexible and environmentally-aware.
These variables are used along with the appropriate structural considerations to develop buildings with well-suited form and style, instead of approaching the design from a stylistic standpoint.
The practice was established in 1982 in Christchurch by David Sheppard and Jonty Rout. In its 40 years the practice has carried out a wide range of projects covering many types and in numerous geographic locations. The founding partners brought to the practice extensive design and construction experience gained while working with other offices in both New Zealand and overseas. Tim Dagg joined Sheppard & Rout in 1986 and Jasper van der Lingen in 1993 and they both joined David Sheppard as Directors in 2006.
With David Sheppard now retired and Jonty very sadly passed away the practice is led by Directors Jasper van der Lingen and Tim Dagg and three Associate Directors; Matt Gutsell, Jonathan Kennedy and Steven Orr.
Our Services
Sheppard & Rout offer planning, urban design, and architectural services. The practice has have gained extensive experience and competency in a diverse range of architecture, from large scale complex commercial and institutional projects to individual homes and alterations.
A focus for Sheppard & Rout is to foster a team approach to practicing architecture that maintains ready and effective communication between client, consultants and contractor. We frequently advise clients on the formulation of the project brief as well as the appropriate options available for their specific development. Furthermore, we have the ability and experience to advise on urban design and planning projects at all scales.
Management
David Sheppard
Consultant - F.N.Z.I.A.

After training in New Zealand and the United States David worked on a range of large scale projects in the US and Europe for several years before returning to New Zealand in 1975 to direct a major planning project near Christchurch. In 1982 he formed Sheppard and Rout Architects with fellow Architect Jonty Rout. In the ensuing 28 years the practice has carried out a diverse range of projects throughout New Zealand and overseas, in architecture and urban design. David has directed the design and planning of projects in the residential, education, health, commercial, Foreign Affairs and urban design sectors. David has served on various architecture and urban design committees and in 2012 became the President of the New Zealand Institute of Architects. He is a member of the N.Z.I.A.'s College of Fellows and Immediate Past President of the N.Z.I.A.
Jasper van der Lingen
Director - F.N.Z.I.A
BArch (Hons)
Since graduating from the Auckland Architecture School in 1988 Jasper has worked in a number of architecture firms in New Zealand and abroad, including a three year period in London. There he worked on architectural projects associated with significant infrastructure works such as the Channel Tunnel and the Jubilee Line Extension. Along with Tim Dagg, Jasper joined David Sheppard as a Director of Sheppard & Rout in 2006.
After joining Sheppard & Rout in 1993, Jasper has worked as Design and Project Architect on large complex jobs, including the Christchurch International Airport Expansion, Burwood Hospital, School of Landscape Architecture at Lincoln University, and most recently the multi-award-winning Stranges Building and BNZ Centre. Jasper is particularly interested in how buildings are integrated into a context and help form the unique identity, memory and cultural setting of a place.
Jasper was the Chairman of the New Zealand Institute of Architects Canterbury branch from 2010 to 2012 and was a member of the NZIA Council from 2015-2017. He was the convenor of the NZIA National Architecture Awards in 2016 and is currently a member of the Christchurch Council Urban Design Panel.
Tim Dagg
Director - A.N.Z.I.A.
BArch (Hons), NZCD (Arch)
After graduating from the Auckland University Architecture School in 1993, Tim rejoined Sheppard & Rout where he had previously trained as an Architectural Draughting Technician. In 2006 Tim, along with Jasper van der Lingen, joined David Sheppard as a Director of the practice.
Since returning to Sheppard & Rout Tim has been Design and Project Architect on a diverse range of projects, including numerous residential homes, Burwood Hospital surgical services unit, Wilding Park Indoor Tennis Centre, Gastroenterology unit at Christchurch Hospital, and refurbishment of the Public Trust Building. He is currently involved as Project Architect overseeing the construction phase for the major redevelopment on the Burwood Hospital Campus.
Tim brings to any project strong skills in facilitation, documentation and teamwork alongside a deep understanding of client and user needs. Tim has an overall QA review role from a technical and coordination point of view for most projects leaving the office.
Matt Gutsell
Associate Director
BArch (Hons)
Since graduating from the University of Auckland School of Architecture in 1999, Matt has gained a broad experience in architecture, working in practices in Hawkes Bay and two years in London. In 2004 he returned to New Zealand to join Sheppard & Rout.
Matt has worked on a varied range of projects since joining Sheppard & Rout, including lead design, documentation and management of residential, commercial and education projects. Having worked on large education projects in London, Matt has developed this experience through key roles in recent projects, including the Landscape Architecture building at Lincoln University, their new commercial kitchen and dining hall, as well as classroom buildings at Avondale, Rangiora Borough and Elmwood Schools.
Current projects include the Burwood Hospital Redevelopment and several commercial, retail and hospitality buildings in central Christchurch, including the Stranges/Glendenning Building. Matt has a strong interest in the use of natural materials and the tectonics of detailing modern buildings while incorporating passive environmental design.
Jonathan Kennedy
Associate Director
BArch (Hons)
Since graduating from the University of Auckland School of Architecture in 2005, Jonathan has worked at some of New Zealand’s top architectural firms. After spending three years in London working for an established architecture firm, he returned to New Zealand to rejoin Sheppard & Rout.
Jonathan has worked on a varied range of projects, including lead design, documentation and management of residential, commercial and educational projects.
Having worked on large scale residential projects in London, Jonathan has developed his experience with the design of award-winning houses in New Zealand. Jonathan currently continues his experience with multi-residential and education projects, with a particular interest in efficient form and design.
Steven Orr
Associate Director
BSc. Arch (Hons) MArch (Distinction)
Steven undertook his architectural studies at both the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, UK and the Bauhaus Universitat, Weimar, Germany. He spent the initial part of his career working in Glasgow, UK for Nord Architecture. Steven joined Sheppard & Rout in early 2011
At Sheppard & Rout, Steven enjoys the variety that comes with working on both large scale commercial projects and complex individual houses. He has successfully delivered complex projects from feasibility assessment to completion. He works alongside his clients developing a close and trusting relationship to ensure a successful outcome for each of his projects.
