The landmark HQ of Spark NZ is the first new building completed by private developers in Cathedral Square since the earthquakes. All photography by Dennis Radermacher/Lightforge.
Geometric patterns in the glazing are based on the slate roof of the neighbouring Gothic-style ChristChurch Cathedral, which is currently being rebuilt following substantial quake damage.
The five-storeyed building links Cathedral Square to the city's retail precinct with a ground floor lobby and high-end retail and hospitality spaces.
The building includes 10,000m² of commercial offices, retail and hospitality spaces, including headquarters for 500 of Spark NZ's Christchurch-based staff.
This energy-efficient double-skinned façade contributes towards the building’s 5 Green Star rating. Its faceted skin achieves a crystalline effect and hangs down the buiding like a skirt.
Filled with shops, bars and restaurants, the ground floor atrium features a dramatic spiral staircase in the public area, seen here with shiny reflective lift doors below.
The staircase appears like a streaming white ribbon that curls around the atrium space and up the building, before it ends on the fifth-floor.
“The ribbon staircase is a thing of beauty as it curves through the space, creating a sculptural effect" – Jasper van der Lingen, Sheppard & Rout Architects.
A circular light well in the centre of the atrium ceiling pulls light down through the building's five levels.
Timber panelling in the interior adds warmth and texture, including a hanging timber staircase inserted into the central void.
Despite the buildings size, its clever design maximises light into the deep interior of the building, including here under the staircase.
A view of the spiralling staircase from one of the upper level atriums. The  building has a base isolation system in the basement to minimise damage during an earthquake.
The timber staircase is a resilient solution in a seismic zone.
Curvaceous timber surfaces add texture and warmth against shiny surfaces.
In Spark's offices, timber stairs work perfectly for talks, small-scale company gatherings and informal break-out spaces
Looking up the timber stairs to the circular lightwell, which draws light down through the five levels.
Comfortable seating for informal meetings is a recurring feature throughout the office floors.
A shared kitchen on one of the floors incorporates a more residential palette of timber panelling and subway tiles to make the office space more warm and inviting.
One of Spark's offices enjoys plenty of sunlight, without overheating due to its double-skin facade, and views over the surrounding cityscape.
A bold lift adds a pop of colour within the neutral palette of materials. Chilled beams cool the office spaces, combined with radiant heating, create a comfortable atmosphere all year long.
Integrated colour-changing LED bulbs in the second skin zigzag all over the building to make it glow like a lantern, enlivening the city at night.

About the
Professional

We aim to produce humanist architecture comprised of stimulating and inspirational spaces and places.

We are a design-based practice that believes in providing tailor-made solutions to an individual client's needs. The fundamental objective of the practice is to develop architecture that is appropriate to its specific site, wider context and intended use while being robust, flexible and environmentally-aware.

These variables are used along with the appropriate structural considerations to develop buildings with well-suited form and style, instead of approaching the design from a stylistic standpoint.

The practice was established in 1982 in Christchurch by David Sheppard and Jonty Rout. In its 40 years the practice has carried out a wide range of projects covering many types and in numerous geographic locations. The founding partners brought to the practice extensive design and construction experience gained while working with other offices in both New Zealand and overseas. Tim Dagg joined Sheppard & Rout in 1986 and Jasper van der Lingen in 1993 and they both joined David Sheppard as Directors in 2006.

With David Sheppard now retired and Jonty very sadly passed away the practice is led by Directors Jasper van der Lingen and Tim Dagg and three Associate Directors; Matt Gutsell, Jonathan Kennedy and Steven Orr.
