Changing family needs prompted a carefully crafted design that provides a clear balance between working from home, family social zones and seclusion areas. The pre-war Queenslander home was modernised while respecting the existing character, and also addressing issues around traffic noise, privacy, security, seasonal flooding and terrain. Our star features are the media loft, the children's understair reading nook and the hidden laundry. Photography: Angus Martin Photography

The central living spaces are specifically designed for human-centric gathering and interaction. Screen time free zones.

The extension is separated from the original house with a small link that connects access and conceals a completely private deck space behind. The spiral staircase brings a sense of whimsy to the journey to the outside world. The site is leveled and retained with improved stormwater absorption and dispersion incorporated.

The kitchen is opened up to the living and dining as the main family gathering space, and a 'secret' laundry is subtly integrated into the space. Natural light and ventilation are prioritised.

Voids spaces are highlighted as seclusions zones, such as a place to hide and read one's way into an alternate universe for a fleeting moment.

The 'media room' is a multifunction loft space above the master suite, with operable roof windows to vent any accumulation of heat in summer and ceate a natural cooling draft through the new wing.

Touches of locally sourced hardwood timbers bring warmth to new spaces. Natural ventilation is featured in support of the SEQ lifestyle.

Restoring and protecting the original home brings longevity to the 'sense of place' for the current and future occupants.

This completely secluded courtyard deck links the mastersuite, the home office and the informal entry to the house.
