This project involved the complete renovation of an outdated and cramped 1950s bathroom, transforming it into a modern, luxurious spa-like retreat. Key objectives included maximizing light and space, addressing structural challenges inherent to an older home, and seamlessly integrating modern amenities. The renovation required meticulous planning and execution, emphasizing collaboration with the client to achieve their vision of a bright, functional, and aesthetically pleasing bathroom.
Unique Challenges and Solutions:
This project presented unique challenges inherent to renovating a 1950s home. The existing bathroom, a cramped and outdated space, demanded a complete overhaul. One significant hurdle was the uneven and compromised structure of the old house. Walls were not square, floors were uneven, and the existing chipboard flooring was rotten. To overcome these obstacles, we meticulously leveled and straightened the walls and replaced the entire floor with H3 ply, providing a stable foundation for the new tile work.A further challenge was the client's need for a functional bathroom throughout the renovation. To minimize disruption, we worked efficiently to complete the project within a tight timeframe, ensuring the client's comfort. The selection and installation of the large format outdoor slate tiles on the shower feature wall, and within the shower niche, required careful inspection and selection of the flattest tiles, due to the tile size and the need for precision.
Seamless Integration of Modern Luxury:
The client envisioned a modern, spa-like bathroom that maximized light and space. To achieve this, we replaced the outdated bay window with a larger, frosted aluminum window, dramatically increasing natural light. Light-colored, floor-to-ceiling tiles further enhanced the sense of brightness and spaciousness. We integrated modern luxuries such as underfloor heating for comfort and strategically placed LED lighting, including a motion-activated strip under the vanity, for ambient illumination. The freestanding bath, equipped with a waterfall spout, and the expansive walk-in shower with a rain shower head, created a luxurious and relaxing atmosphere.
Client Satisfaction:
Our clients were "blown away" by the transformation, comparing the experience to having a personal spa. The seamless integration of modern amenities with a bright, open design exceeded their expectations. A particular highlight was the custom shower niche and the feature wall using outdoor slated tiles. The client played a large role in the design and feature selection. The project has received admiration from visitors, who consistently praise the bathroom as one of the most beautiful they have seen. The attention to detail, from the precise tile work to the ambient lighting, is a testament to our dedication to creating spaces that blend functionality with modern luxury.
