Unique Challenges and Solutions

This project presented several unique challenges that required innovative solutions. To preserve the stunning rimu timber detailing, we meticulously marked and removed each piece without damage, safely storing them for reinstallation after insulating and relining the walls. Detailed photographs were taken to ensure each piece was returned to its original place, maintaining the house’s historical character.

During the reroofing process, we encountered an unexpected layer of asbestos beneath the old iron roof, which resembled dragon scales. We swiftly upgraded the scaffolding and constructed a protective tent to safely remove the asbestos, ensuring the house remained shielded from the elements. Despite several storms, we prepared the roof for its new covering without incident.

The house expansion included creating a large open-plan kitchen, dining, and lounge area while maintaining the original style with beautiful matai timber flooring. We also extended the master bedroom to include an ensuite and added a new garage with a green roof. Building the garage posed a unique challenge due to its proximity to a protected tree, requiring careful coordination with an arborist during excavation.

Seamless Integration of Old and New
Our goal was to ensure the renovations appeared seamless, as if the house had never been touched. Careful attention to cladding, with staggered joins for added strength, contributed to the authentic look and feel. The large open-plan extension at the rear, with its old-style kitchen and continuous matai flooring, harmonized perfectly with the original structure.
