Boxed Quarter banner

Boxed Quarter was the first large-scale iteration of the prefabricated Boxus system designed by Field, after the success of smaller temporary projects ArtBox and BeatBox. Boxus is a flexible spatial system made with three-dimensional earthquake-safe 100mm steel frames. It is largely dismantlable to avoid waste and allow for relocation and repurposing of all or part of the construction.

It’s a unique design feat in more ways. The mixed-use development was envisioned to be the home of art, music, hospitality, design studios and even residential, and this goal has been achieved. The structure is porous; tenants and visitors easily flow through the space, interacting and exploring new sights around every corner. Removable art panels allow tenants to customise their space, and the density means the building feels like a village.

Field Studio provided full service for this development, from master-planning to concept to detailed documentation and construction observation. Field also designed many of the internal spaces including the fit-out of our own floating studio space and beautiful apartments.

About the
Professional

Field Studio of Architecture and Urbanism is an architectural practice based in Ōtautahi Christchurch.

Along with residential builds and major commercial projects, we contribute to projects and organisations that have a positive impact on the community. Drawing on our 10 years experience of community development following the Canterbury earthquakes, Field has developed significant experience working on projects that have social, cultural, ecological and values-based purposes.

Our team is diverse, highly skilled, and above all, collaborative. We foster strong working relationships with clients, stakeholders, consultants and contractors to enable us to respond effectively to the needs of each project, ultimately achieving high quality architectural outcomes.

Our design process starts with listening to the people involved to better understand the needs of the project. We then integrate and balance these needs and aspirations through different design mediums, ensuring collective understanding and involvement in decision making.

From small-scale residential to major commercial builds, our professional skills and experience means we are able to ensure high quality architecture that is fit for purpose, efficiently and creatively achieved.
