Originally an Edwardian home, Wellard Architects were brought in to transform the home to suit their client's needs. Here, they tell us more about their strategy to make the home come together.
"This project reworked the existing footprint, retaining period detailing, with an addition to provide calm fluid spaces, with an emphasis on spatial links between inside and out. The wide, timber-panelled hallway leads to a light filled, open plan kitchen and living space and provides visual links to gardens along the way.
The overall palette is of simplicity and purity. Soft neutral tones and natural materials such as pale oak, bagged brickwork, black steel, concrete and stone, express their individual character. Lighting, furniture and a central sculptural fireplace with semi-circular marble hearth were selected to add a softness to sharp and geometric building forms and to anchor the dining space within the new large open plan volume.
The backyard welcomes the Addis & Wye Collections by Kett.
Large window openings and carefully positioned skylights bring warmth and natural light to the surrounding tactile materials. An oversized sliding window forms a 3.8-metre-wide opening in the kitchen, allowing for effortless expansion to external dining and natural ventilation."
Wellard Architects chose the Addis & Wye collections to sit in the backyard. Designed by Justin Hutchinson for Kett, these outdoor furniture pieces have an Australian story - designed in Melbourne and influenced by the Victorian landscape.
The strong minimal lines of the outdoor setting speaks directly back to the architecture, the Addis and Wye being the perfect fit in form and narrative.

Focused primarily on indoor collections, Justin and his team have been busy designing and bringing to market some new and exceptional collections inspired by the Australian way of life.
