Fifteen-Storey High-Rise Office Tower
AN EXISTING REINFORCED CONCRETE FRAMED STRUCTURE
Tino Structures was engaged by EQ Struc Limited to provide key technical services on the Citigroup Centre building for the leading NZX-listed property group, Argosy Property Limited. The subject building is an existing fifteen-storey high-rise Reinforced Concrete (RC) framed structure. The scope of our work includes the following:
Detailed site inspection and investigations to determine the as-built configuration of the building
3D linear and non-linear displacement-based analysis of the primary and secondary structural elements of the building for a Detailed Seismic Assessment (DSA)
Analysis of the deep foundations and the soil-foundation-structure-interactions during a major earthquake
Technical review and advice on the detailed design of the structural upgrade to improve the seismic performance of the building and strengthen the building for the proposed alterations at the basement and podium levels
WHAT OUR CLIENTS SAY…
“I worked with Dr John on the review and seismic assessment, using non-linear static methods, of an existing multi-storey structure within Central Auckland. Dr John was selected due to his knowledge in this area and the fact he had successfully undertaken assessments on similarly scaled buildings in the past.
Dr John was the main engineer involved with the project and completed the majority of the desktop review and the detailed analysis work. John also interfaced with the client during the project.
The project was completed within a tight timeframe with positive feedback from the client. It provided useful and robust information on the structural capacity and performance of their building. This allowed them to plan for further works within the building. For EQ Struc, it helps to build client rapport by delivering a quality service which Dr John most definitely delivered.
Dr John is a professional in this conduct and has a significant depth of knowledge in his areas of expertise.
He is technically capable and professional. He can add significant value to very challenging projects.”
— PETER LIU, DIRECTOR OF EQ STRUC LTD, PROFESSIONAL SERVICES FIRM OFFERING TECHNICAL SERVICES IN STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING
“Dr John Jing worked with Argosy on a particularly unusual job at 23 Customs Street. Whilst working with him we found the services very prompt, courteous and obliging. He had a great understanding of what we needed to achieve and although it was a small job it got 100% of his attention.
Dr John is very efficient and good at what he does. Even in the case of urgent jobs, the response time was excellent.
Overall, we got the desired result and would happily use Dr John Jing for structural engineering projects again.”

WHY CHOOSE TINO STRUCTURES?
Tino Structures is New Zealand's leading structural engineering consultancy that always puts our clients’ needs at the forefront of everything we do. We specialise in structural engineering for new construction, alteration, extension, conversion, refurbishment and seismic projects. As structural engineering consultants, we offer our clients more than 20 years' experience in structural design and seismic assessments in New Zealand.
RESIDENTIAL HOMES TO BILLION-DOLLAR INFRASTRUCTURE
Tino Structures is led by Dr John Jing, who is one of New Zealand’s top structural engineers. Since 2004, John has been involved in many new-build projects ranging from single-storey houses to multi-million-dollar multi-storey buildings and multi-billion-dollar infrastructure projects, including bridges. It comes as no surprise that property owners/developers, councils and leading engineering firms continue to rely on John’s extensive experience and expertise.
WHY IS STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING SO IMPORTANT?
Structural engineering is essential to society because it directly impacts the safety and durability of our buildings and structures. It is structural engineering that determines a hospital’s ability to survive an earthquake, a warehouse to endure gale-force winds and bridges to support safe weight maximums.
As structural engineers, we are also tasked with ensuring that materials and resources are used efficiently. But we must also work within the design aesthetics of a project, combining practical function, budgetary considerations and visual appeal in a way that satisfies all requirements of the structure.
STRUCTURAL EFFICIENCY AND RESILIENCE
Combining leading research with practical experience, we are capable of maximising structural efficiency and resilience. Structural efficiency can be defined in many ways, but we will try to optimise space utilisation within a building while keeping structural costs at the minimum. New Zealand is an extremely earthquake-prone nation. Our seismic design capabilities include low-damage and damage-avoidance systems such as base isolation, hybrid dampers, buckling-restrained braces, rocking walls and frames and slip-friction connections, making buildings more resilient to major earthquakes.
SEISMIC ASSESSMENTS AND RETROFIT DESIGN
The consultancy also has a separate division: Tino Seismic. Using proprietary methods and unmatched expertise, Tino Seismic specialises in getting the most accurate and precise NBS ratings, and cost-effective and non-disruptive seismic strengthening solutions for New Zealand buildings. We have assessed and retrofitted more than 800 heritage and commercial buildings across New Zealand.
