This kitchen was designed for an architecturally significant, 1960’s home, by Ron Sang, and features a large picture window that takes up one entire wall of the space.

The new homeowners wanted a contemporary kitchen, while still keeping with the style of the original home. Improved workflow and more bench space, along with convenient storage for an extensive small appliance collection was also requested, as well as some built-in cabinetry for the adjacent dining room.

The original features of the house were kept and referred to – such as the serving hatch in the back wall and the mahogany ascents in the shelving and dresser.

The tall elements – the fridge, ovens, and the pantry – are all housed in floor-to-ceiling, black-stained oak cabinets on the wall opposite the window.

An extra-deep, 80cm hob bench in titanium granite was specified, to accommodate the on- and above- bench storage for small appliances, cook books, and cooking equipment. The depth of the adjacent benchtop containing the double sink was also greatly increased from the original layout, and is located under a large northeast-facing window.

The addition of a retro inspired dresser in the dining room gives additional storage for both the kitchen and dining room, including a drinks area, with integrated wine fridge, and built-in cutlery drawers facing into the kitchen.

The mix of black-stained oak and white polyurethane cabinetry with the white-veined, leather finished granite and the mahogany and stainless steel accents delivers a richness and sophistication to the space, in keeping with its architectural past.
