Island Life in the Suburbs
Indoor-outdoor living is the focus of this family home in Auckland's eastern suburb of Farm Cove.
The house is layered up on three different levels, creating a beautiful flow throughout and breaking up the mass of this 675m² home.
The family enjoys stunning views across the Tamaki River. An extended roof provides protection from the harsh sun during the summer.
An aerial view of Island Life in the Suburbs nestled behind its sister home, Farm Cove I, which was built and sold to fund the former.
The streetview of Island Life in the Suburbs showing its distinctive dark-stained cedar and seamed metal claddings, complemented by a shuttered insitu concrete feature wall at the main entrance.
The main entrance leads straight through into a double-height corridor and staircase.
Watching the water and boats float by helps make this a remarkably peaceful home.
The kitchen forms the central hub to three different outdoor living areas: the lounge (front), outdoor kitchen and dining space (right) and swimming pool (rear).
The outdoor kitchen and dining area has a built-in bar and fireplace. A sliding glass door at the end can be pulled across depending on the wind's direction.
Sliding doors open up the two lounges and dining area on two sides, while a glass balustrade provides a transparent enclosure for the swimming pool.
A relaxed and sunny lounging space overlooks the pool and the river view.
By night, the kitchen comes alive with feature lighting and a blue-lit pool as a backdrop.
The large spaces and hard surfaces are made warm and brought to life with comfortable and homely furniture and furnishings.
The timber and metal stairwell connects three floors and is backed by a striking wall constructed in shuttered insitu concrete.
The home utilises bespoke cabinetry in pale oak, adding warmth to the concrete walls.
Tiling, tapware and pedestal basin in copper create a warm and elegant bathroom.
A sheltered courtyard provides the perfect lounge area for evening drinks, linking to both the kitchen, the scullery, and the guest bedroom and bathroom.
The view from the courtyard looks right across the kitchen to the water.
The outdoor kitchen and dining area flows directly into the internal kitchen via sliding doors that can be pushed completely back and out of the way.
A night view of the blue-lit swimming pool gains a tropical feel from the shadows cast by mature palm trees and the setting sun.
