Years of rapid flow combined with localalised property development had led to river bank subsidence that was affecting residential properties bordering the Kahika Stream in Birkdale.
Rehabilitation works required significant retaining structures including timber pole retaining walls, gabion baskets and rock rip-rap. Early in the construction variable soils and soft ground were encountered, and the client involved Engineering Design Consultants to provide immediate geotechnical supervision, investigation and amended design services.
EDC became intimately involved in the supervision of the rehabilitation structure construction, requiring many site visits (often at short notice) to investigate unforeseen conditions as they occurred. To avoid any hold-ups to the project, EDC responded with quick turn-around revised designs for those specific ground conditions. As a result the stream is thriving. The flow is unobstructed and the remediation works well visually with the surroundings.
