Hastings Civic Square Revitalisation

Horizon International Paving is proud to have played a role in the revitalisation of Hastings Civic Square, a project that balances public safety with cultural expression and local identity.

Led by Hastings District Council, the Civic Square upgrade focused on replacing damaged and uneven paving that had become a safety concern. Horizon International Paving was contracted to supply the paving as part of the broader $981,000 refurbishment.

The newly installed permeable Waipavers were designed by Iwi Toi Kahungunu, a collective of tribal artists, with guidance from Hira Huata. Their work brings a powerful visual narrative to the space, honouring the diverse communities of Hastings and acknowledging the significance of the two nearby war memorials.

At the heart of the square is Ngā Pou o Heretaunga, a collection of 18 carved pou that represent marae from across the Heretaunga region, as well as one from the Cook Islands. During the revitalisation, the pou were returned to their marae and carvers for inspection and restoration, marking the first time the entire collection has been temporarily removed since their installation in 2012.

This project represents a meaningful investment in the cultural fabric of Hastings, and Horizon International Paving is honoured to contribute to a space that will continue to serve as a place of gathering, reflection and connection for the community.
