This urban design project involved substantial public consultation, creating a vibrant, safe and commercially sustaining asset for the city.

“Though this is a large urban space, the architects have managed to create an intimate relationship with the river, a waterway of historical importance. Strong, sculptural elements are seen in the ramp which leads to the open amphitheater and provides smooth transition to the water. Splashes of colour and vibrant light fittings give direction, and lend a playful aspect to the area.”

This project embraces ‘pavement life’ with an urban architectural solution that encompasses street art, theater and sculpture, colour, movement and scale. The plaza also provides for community activities with dedicated pedestrian areas and linkages between key city streets. It is a celebration of the city and of a unique landmark. The design itself enhances the historical, environmental and cultural significance of the Huatoki Stream, which runs through the city from Mt Taranaki to the sea.

The design solution was guided by the NZ Urban Design Protocol’s essential design qualities of context, character, choice, connections, creativity, custodianship and collaboration. This was in an effort to define New Plymouth’s identity and ensure liveability and wellbeing are maintained and enhanced for city residents and visitors now and into the future.
