Second-Storey Extension and Renovation in Kew

A custom second-storey home extension blends sophistication and traditional elements for a timeless residence.

Spacemaker Home Extensions was tasked with revamping this period home in Kew into a family-friendly abode with ample light and space, while preserving the original 1980s charm and heritage.

Within 10 months, the custom extension transformed the property from a single-storey 124 m² space into a warm, luxurious two-storey 314 m² home. New additions include a kitchen with a walk-in pantry, family bathroom with a separate powder room, laundry area, master suite with a walk-in robe and ensuite, and more spacious living and eating areas. A clever use of space features plenty of workspaces hidden behind closed doors.

A careful balance between retaining the original history of the home while adding contemporary 21st century touches ultimately resulted in a beautiful contrast between the two. Great consideration and care was taken at each step of the second storey build to ensure that its design complemented the existing ground floor details. Fixtures and finishes were kept consistent throughout the home. An elegant blackbutt staircase with vertical slats is functional, and serves as a focal point to connect the two storeys.

Energy-efficient design features include the smart placement of windows, achieving an R4.0 rating, and reducing the demand for heating and cooling interventions. The windows are made from Certified Australian Sustainable hardwood timber, sourced from regrowth forests.
