L'ARC MAISON showcases the harmonious connection between old and new with careful consideration of the constraints the surrounding natural landscape had to offer. The linearity of the modern extension draws the overall design back to the linear nature of the existing site and adds a point of interest with its connection to the skewed plan of the once standalone cottage. From the street, the unassuming sandstone cottage masks the scale of the overall project. Coupled with the muted tones of the concrete, timber and sandstone materiality, the project nestles itself into the natural landscape as it steps down the steep terrain. By drawing inspiration from the original sandstone cottage, the modern extension aims to introduce sandstone elements in the materiality of the façade and interiors to seamlessly connect the old and the new, whilst also highlighting a point of difference.

when entering the house one is immediately met with views of the tree-lined horizon through the highlight windows that frame the pop-up roof element. The pop-up roof element is positioned over the central stair that connects the new extension with the existing house and funnels natural light into the core of the split-level design. This sets the scene for the remainder of the journey through the house as the ability to capture the view of the surrounding bush terrain is a key element of the house’s design. The floor plan has been carefully arranged to enable views from the entire main living space, master bedroom and multi-purpose room. The rawness of the polished concrete floors complements the surrounding view as its muted tone draws the eye to the vibrant landscape. When one concludes their internal experience of the inside of the lower level of the plan, the portion of glass within the pool edge further offers uninterrupted views of the natural elements
