The Newmarket Salon is a bold and highly graphic remodelling of an art gallery to a high-end hair salon. This sculptural, contemporary fit-out draws inspiration from the minimalist art forms and mirrored box-like structures of Donald Judd and Robert Morris. Light reflection from smoked mirrors, and precious metals create the illusion of space and atmospheric intrigue. Lighting was critical in establishing mood and featuring the bespoke elements as statements in the space.
With a 180-degree road frontage, the way the project was viewed from an external perspective was highly important, whilst creating private and meditative enclaves closer to its core. The bespoke features were informed by the works of Willy Rizzo, Milo Baughman and Gaetano Sciolari to draw on international styles to ensure the space had a feeling of historic consideration. The palette responds to feelings of opulence, transparency and translucency and the materials become activated by sunlight and respond uniquely at different times in the day.
