When Maiko Nagao (@maikonagao) told us she had been looking for a natural timber product "for a while" for a project she was working on, we knew we had just the right thing to woo her. She had been inspired by products she had seen overseas, timber profiles that fitted together creating unique surface textures. Exactly what we specialise in.

Maiko is an artist and designer, well known for her minimalist line drawings using Japanese Sumi (charcoal) ink to create bold, raw and expressive strokes. Her art features in many homes around Australia and New Zealand. Her latest project turned out to be her first home renovation. Every aspect of her home has been designed or co-designed with New Zealand businesses.

With her background in design and passion for our product, it sounded exactly like the kind of project we love to be involved in.

After settling on a profile design, she hit us with a curve ball - or a curved kitchen island as it turned out. Maiko wanted to curve our profile’s around not one but two curves in her kitchen island.

Maiko had decided on our Ninety Mile profiles and after a bit of consultation with our machining team - we came up with a solution. The solution has proven popular and the resulting profile is aptly named the "Maiko MD05".

To say we were well pleased with the end result is an understatement. We love how she has kept the finish looking natural, showing off the features that are so unique to Radiata Pine. We think it's a work of art - we'd like to say it's what we'd expect from an accomplished artist, yet we were still taken aback at the end result. It's projects like this that inspire our creative team.

Ninety-Mile NM03 now features on a wall in her living room and the new Maiko profile MD05 around her impressive kitchen island.

It was a pleasure to be involved in her renovation journey. Following her process online -
