Perimeter House - Inside and Out 

A stately Queenslander needed an improved connection to its natural surroundings. Matt Kennedy from Arcke successfully achieved this by blurring the distinction between inside and out and offering a seamless transition through the living spaces.  

The Perimeter House in Paddington, Brisbane required an emotive response to considerations such as light, space and connection to the outdoors. The design evolved as a unique response to the site. Firstly, the original house was raised so the living spaces and kitchen could be relocated to the ground level. A dramatic north-facing double height void created space and light for the dining room, living spaces and kitchen. In addition walls rendered in Rockcote Lime Plaster seamlessly continue from inside to out to emphasise the connection. The living spaces are designed to be opened up or closed off to the elements – minimising footprint and maximising liveability. When it came to material selections Arcke chose textured finishes such as warm terracotta brickwork, recycled spruce ceiling panels, warm timber veneers, old school terrazzo and Rockcote Lime Plaster which was used on all the walls wrapping the perimeter of the house. It proved the perfect product with its natural variations and organic finish to achieve a light, airy and peaceful home.
