A modern two-bedroom residence with dual informal offices, strategically positioned on a steep sand dune to enhance connectivity with the landscape and breathtaking views of Kapiti Island and the South Island.
The clients bought a property crowned with a suspended derelict bach from the 60’s on the steep sand dune bordering the Paekakariki Parade along the Tasman sea, and were aiming for a 2 bedroom house with 2 informal offices.
To reach from the beach to the top of the hill in the most easy and direct manner, we positioned the house in a central axis making use of the journey from the beach, through the landscaped sand dunes, maximising the connection between the house and the land.
The form of the house, and subsequently the interior spatial qualities, are developed from a low ridge point at the roadside that minimises the perceived volume of the house. The simple gable ridge line rises at a three degree angle away from the sea with the living areas having the most voluminous spaces overlooking the expansive views of Kapiti Island and the South Island.
