Located on The Waterfront in Seatoun, Wellington, Project X consists of two contemporary houses. One house belongs to the architect owner and the other to a friend. The houses adjoin a narrow band of reserve that connects directly onto beach and rocky foreshore to the east of Seatoun beach.
The two adjoining houses have been designed around individual private and sheltered courtyards. The courtyards then divide each house in two again providing for a range of different living options. The two houses are linked by a glazed gallery with a long polished concrete wall. The design maximises the dramatic view whilst providing ease of access to the outside through large sliding walls of glass. Building materials are a robust low maintenance combination of pre-cast concrete and stained cedar cladding. The houses have been designed for the spectacular coastal location and the ever changing marine environment. The ground and first floor are concrete as are the two storey inter-tenancy wall and ground floor walls.
The requirements for each house were completely different No. 35 was to accommodate a couple whose children have left home. It was also a requirement to provide an extensive home office as the owner runs his business from home. No. 37 was for the architect owner, his partner and family of three young children. The separate accommodation above the garage which whilst linked by the gallery created essentially a separate wing for two children with a playroom. The house had to be designed to be flexible into the future as the requirements of the family changed.
The design was to be contemporary and understated. It had to be robust and work well with the environment. Both clients were looking for an enduring work of architecture.
