Heritage Reimagined

Originally completed in 1900, St James Church is a significant Mt Eden landmark that has been carefully restored and reimagined as four contemporary residences. Designed in the Neoclassical tradition by architects John Mitchell and Robert Watt, the 125-year-old building has been given a new purpose while retaining the architectural character that has defined it for generations. Led by Gel Architects, the transformation pairs extensive restoration and seismic strengthening with the considered insertion of four spacious three-bedroom apartments. Original elements, including stained glass, decorative bracing and wide Kauri boards, have been retained, restored or repurposed, creating a strong dialogue between the building’s heritage and its new residential life. Robertson Bathware supplied a diverse selection of bathroom and kitchen products throughout the development. Zucchetti Brim tapware brings refined Italian detailing to the bathrooms, complemented by Elementi Splash Lux shower systems and Novara vanities. Elementi Uno toilet suites provide everyday functionality, while Victoria + Albert Barcelona vessel basins and the sculptural Barcelona III freestanding bath introduce a sense of luxury to the interiors. Nobili Mania kitchen mixers complete the specification within the kitchens. The result is a sensitive balance of old and new, where contemporary comfort sits comfortably within one of Mt Eden’s distinctive historic buildings. The project was recognised with a 2026 NZIA Auckland Heritage Award, celebrating the care and rigour behind its restoration and adaptive reuse.
