The owner’s mid-century bungalow was ready for renovation, to create spaces that reflected modern living. This included a new kitchen to be incorporated into the living/dining space. The new kitchen would occupy a similar space as before, but an island would now create the connection between kitchen and dining with a bar on one side.
Designer, Wayne Church, has created a kitchen that embodies the client’s contemporary aesthetic. The lines in the new design are minimal, with handle-less negative finger pulls and no unnecessary details. The heroes in this kitchen are undoubtedly the materials – steel, walnut, granite and tiles laid in a herringbone pattern. The materials work in harmony, balancing one another. The bar, in solid walnut, with waterfall granite ends, create a centrepiece. Under-bench cabinets finished in Resene one-eighth Truffle cut the richness of the other materials.
Practically, the kitchen layout has great flow, with entrance to the kitchen either side of the island. The kitchen is well specified with Fisher and Paykel appliances, an under-bench Neff combination microwave oven, and a Vintec wine fridge. Plenty of storage has been packed into the kitchen with an on-bench pantry in the corner, generous overhead cabinets, and ample drawer space under-bench.
The final result is a thoroughly modern kitchen that is at once elegant and minimal, yet visually rich, with a palette of textures and finishes that work so well together in this setting.
