In collaboration with Leighs Construction, Holcim New Zealand has played a pivotal role in reshaping the skyline of Ngāmotu New Plymouth through its supply of more than 10,000 cubic metres of ready-mix concrete to the Taranaki Base Hospital.
This government-led NZD 403 million rebuild included supply of concrete for critical areas like the emergency department (ED), intensive care unit (ICU), maternity, primary birthing, neonatal, radiology, laboratory, and a rooftop helipad.
Holcim New Zealand’s dedication addressed construction challenges by delivering technically advanced concrete mixes customized to meet the project's varied requirements – including the architectural finish to create the “Rolls Royce of concrete floors” on the ground level. To achieve these goals, Holcim New Zealand maintains an efficient concrete supply, fosters open communication, and provides committed service that are essential in keeping the project on track and within budget.
The hospital’s rebuild demonstrates innovative design and forward-thinking features, such as removable windows to facilitate future replacement of large medical equipment like CT and MRI machines. Additionally, the roofs are designed to bear heavy volcanic ash loads in case of an eruption of Taranaki Maunga, and the ground floor showcases an architectural design.
