This modern take on the New Zealand covered yard serves as a hub for equestrian activities on an Auckland lifestyle block.

Living on heavily contoured land, the clients had recognised the need for an outdoor venue where the family could safely facilitate care and leisure time with their horses. Within close proximity to the main house, and easy access to an exisiting arena, the key site was identified. It was cut and retained to form a space sympathetically nestled into the bank below the garden. The building has been positioned to offer shelter from the prevailing wind with integrated feed and tack rooms.

The open nature of the structure was a key requirement for the client who wanted to move away from a closed style stable. Framed front panels of JSC Lunawood oiled with Dryden wood oil were used to offer a subtle nod to the traditional weatherboard stables of the UK. Heavy mesh steel gates made onsite and powder-coated in Dulux Flaxpod provided a durable, yet airy solution whilst lending an architectural edge. The main interior walls were clad with a black HDPE board for a sleek yet robust finish; with one stall boasting a removable partition allowing for a flexible arrangement of the internal space. A discreet door behind the building encloses a thoughtfully curated storage space where tack and cherished leather items are displayed functionally with pride.

Roof mounted solar panels have been installed to provide independent carbon neutral power for lighting and hose taps. True Oak Colorsteel corrugate was chosen to complement the adjacent 1920’s bungalow, with the two structures standing upon the property as an elegant blend of modern and historical.
