The W Hotel project had all the challenges of the high-profile build – two different builders, spectacular harbourside location, multiple stakeholders including an international design company, and local procurement consultant.
The challenges were huge, but the rewards were great, with the result worth the time and energy expended. The design-led, Instagram-worthy response is winning accolades throughout both Australia and overseas.

The Journey
Located in Sydney’s Darling Harbour, The W Hotel 'Ribbon' is operated by the Marriot group, and a premium Signature hotel locations.
The floor covering brief to Designer Rugs was multi-layered. Not only did the rugs need to follow a clear design aesthetic, they also needed to respond to high demands of the end users.
Designer Rugs responded to all the demands with its usual care and precision. Commercial Manager at Designer Rugs, Lynnette Dowling Wiley worked with consultants Cairn Cross Martin, representing UK-based designers Bowler James Brindley onsite, and directly with the client and onsite builders/team.
“We've previously done several Marriott Hotels including Signature Pier One on Sydney Harbour,” explains Lynnette, “so we understood the level of design luxury and specification performance required.”
With multiple stakeholders, she adds that communication was key across all The W Hotel project teams. Owner/developer of the site, Greaton, wanted to work with a premium brand such as Designer Rugs on the project.
“We had the aesthetic and the concept requirement from an international interior designer along with a team on the ground,” she says. “Several factors needed to be considered. They wanted the supplier of the rugs to be able to work within the constraints and challenges of evolving design changes, Covid, numerous builders, and what was required onsite, to provide a fit-for-purpose flooring product across the various spaces.”
The Solution
The Designer Rug expert designers worked with the team to create custom-made rugs for the foyer, restaurant, and spa. The rugs encapsulated a rich colour palette and luxurious aesthetic, balanced with practicality suitable for public areas within a hotel.
The spa area required a customised design solution around in–built ‘pods’ that catered to manicures and pedicures. Deemed 'wet areas', the solution couldn’t compromise the visual aesthetic of the design or functionality of the rugs.
The Designer Rugs team had previously worked with Cairns Cross Martin on the Taronga Zoo function and conference centre, which had also had myriad if similar challenges.
“CCM knew that we could create something that would work – and work within the constraints of the challenges of the W/The Ribbon project,” says Lynnette.
The Result
Senior Design Manager at Greaton, John Counios, gave praise "the rugs elevate the ambiance with their exquisite craftsmanship, diverse styles, and durability.
“Seamlessly blending with the hotel's bold modern aesthetic, these rugs serve as both functional pieces and works of art,” he added. “Their vibrant colours and intricate designs captivate guests, sparking conversations and adding sophistication to the space. From contemporary patterns to timeless motifs, each rug exudes its own distinct personality, inviting guests to immerse themselves in the luxury and elegance synonymous with The W Hotel brand.”
“Designer Rugs quality craftsmanship and durability make them a worthwhile investment that can withstand the test of time, providing enjoyment and beauty for years to come.”
“Greaton enjoyed a positive experience with Designer Rugs and appreciated their ability to elevate the aesthetic appeal of our hotel space, providing warmth, and serving as intrinsic pieces of functional art.”
