The Moxi Café in Ohope was started by two locals who wanted to serve great coffee in their hometown. With incredible vision, they have been able to turn their limited space into a popular and versatile area.

Shipping containers transformed into the kitchen and serving area create a truly industrial vibe, and the addition of four Bask Louvre Roofs helps complete the minimalist feel of the café. Not to look out of place, the louvre roof system was perfectly matched with the colour palette of the café décor.

Matt Black was used for the containers and louvre roof frame to give a modern look, and lighter colours such as Silver Pearl were used for the louvre blades. The contrast is sleek, and the Silver Pearl louvres help bring light into the dining space.

The combination of four louvre roofs allows the Moxi staff to adapt the sitting area to the conditions; whether the stunning Bay of Plenty sun is shining down or if conditions are slightly wetter. In total, the area covered by the louvre roof is almost 47m², so finding a compliant layout that didn’t detract from the ambience was a challenge. 

A combination of structural posts and connections to the container structure were selected so that bay sizes could be maximised and posts minimised. 

The result is a great structure, fit for purpose and the backdrop to a successful business where the food and the service are the real stars.
