The B405 Faculty of Engineering Building / Te Herenga Mātai Pūkaha is a building of high complexity situated at the University of Auckland's city campus. A state-of-the-art research and learning facility, it's designed to empower future generations of engineers and enhance collaboration between different research areas within the faculty.
The 12-storey, 32,000m2 facility saw the refurbishment of neighbouring structures to create an interconnected engineering precinct, uniting previously discrete building elements. Key to transforming the student experience, five engineering departments share a building for the first time in twenty years, also unlocking the potential for new learning pathways and research innovation.
The flexible and precise design of the laboratory spaces is unparalleled in New Zealand, providing cutting-edge capability and resilience to the University. It features over 50 modular teaching and research laboratories that are easily adapted to changing research programs and technologies. It also hosts facilities for post-graduate research, staff collaboration, and larger study and breakout areas.
This project is an excellent illustration of sustainability embodied at all levels of design and master planning. It possesses advanced seismic design, energy and material efficiency, lowering maintenance costs and providing long-term flexibility and adaptability.
While the construction programme was tight, and the project team successfully achieved Project Completion on time so that the building was ready for the University at the beginning of the 2020 academic year.
