Waiheke Lock and Leave

Ideas and Inspiration: In this project we wanted to showcase the small, but perfectly formed 50m2 studio located on Waiheke Island designed by Peta Davy at Yellowfox.

What was the brief for this kitchen and were there any challenges had to be overcome to achieve the overall result?

  • We wanted to challenge the Kiwi obsession with white, on white, on white and chose materials from an industrial-style palette. Leonie Metge of Cube Dentro took the palette, delved into the detail and produced this stunning galley style kitchen.

There were two requests that proved challenging - an island and space for an on bench coffee machine. We were able to compromise with a cantilevered breakfast bar and an integrated coffee machine.

How does the Smokey Mirror splashback enhance the overall look of the space?

  • With a 50m2 footprint, creating the illusion of space was a primary consideration.

The Smokey Mirror not only does that, but it also reflects the look-a-like brick wall tiles adding a further textural component. Lastly, the Smokey Mirror splashback and bar inserts complement the moody aesthetic trend coming out of Europe.

What do the owners love the most about the finished space?

  • In their own words "The beautiful, workable kitchen" and "The way the space comes alive at night, reminiscent of a New York cigar loft that envelops you like a snug blanket".
