Wharewaka, Taupo

This elegant and timeless lake-front home has become a sanctuary for its owners. The North-facing sheltered site offers stunning views across Lake Taupo while also providing shelter from the sun and wind in three different entertaining areas with great indoor-outdoor flow.

Very strong attention to detail was required from the builders to ensure each element of the house was seamlessly integrated. They include a window seat nook with elevated views cross the lake. A high-end kitchen, luxurious bathrooms and a walk in wardrobe. A panelled ceiling is also a key feature throughout the house.

Unique Features and Innovation

Innovative building ideas were continuously shared with the owners. The Craftsmen’s builders helped the clients visualise various outcomes and gave them time to think about options. Regular meetings were also held with the Architect Fraser Cameron.

  • The house comprises of three seperate buildings joined together by corridors. Richard Stewart suggested continuing the same outdoor cladding on the inside of each corridor. This brought a unique aspect to the house, bringing the outside in and making the spaces feel at one with Taupo’s changing elements.
  • Wheelchair access has been seamlessly and subtly integrated throughout the house.
  • The builders integrated panelling in the bathrooms to reflect the ceiling detail.
  • Pathways using varying lengths of timber add a modern twist to this otherwise classic home.
  • Planter boxes were integrated into the decking.
  • This kitchen bench is made of Oak with mesh panel inserts that create a remarkable point of difference. A lower bench allows for wheel chair access so the whole family can share it with ease.
