Project Overview & Scope
TEC provided structural design and construction monitoring for the retaining walls supporting a fivedwelling development in Māngere Bridge, delivered in collaboration with Wildboar Footings Ltd. The original scheme considered conventional concrete block retaining walls with reinforced concrete foundations. By switching to Wildboar (Surefoot) piles, precast walers, and steel framing, the build sequence was simplified, excavation reduced, and the structural system tailored to the site’s constraints. TEC’s scope covered the retaining wall design from concept through PS4.
Challenges
The project required careful consideration of several sitecritical constraints, including a public wastewater main with associated exclusion zones, a neighbouring block wall subject to strict deflection limits, variable subsurface conditions, and an elevated coastal corrosion environment. During construction, unforeseen overexcavation beneath the boundary wall demanded a rapid and measured engineering response to maintain safety and programme momentum.
Outcomes & Value
Add TEC delivered a fully consented and buildable design that reduced excavation, simplified construction sequencing, and mitigated programme risk. The Surefoot and steel solution offered a more efficient alternative to conventional concrete construction, while timely site support enabled emerging construction issues to be resolved without redesign. The result was a durable 50-year solution, underpinned by clear documentation and practical engineering input throughout delivery.
