About Galleries projects
Galleries need rooms that support the exhibition programme without making each installation a building project. Tamahere Arts Centre by First Light Studio Ltd and Artspace by Leuschke Group Architects are among the New Zealand galleries projects published here. A new brief should establish how often displays will change and where equipment will be stored between exhibitions. Those decisions affect wall construction and the space needed behind the public rooms.

Existing buildings bring a different set of constraints. The Christchurch Art Gallery Base-Isolation Retrofit Project by Ruamoko records structural intervention, while The Forrester Gallery Extension by Ōamaru Stone (Parkside Quarries) represents an addition to an existing gallery. A retrofit brief should begin with an assessment of the building and the collection’s protection requirements. Extensions also need a clear junction between old and new fabric, with construction access planned separately from any areas that remain open.
How should exhibition lighting be specified?
Confirm light limits for the intended artworks with the curator before selecting fittings. Adjustable track lighting can accommodate changing displays, while daylight may need shading or blackout control.
What should be checked before fixing artwork to gallery walls?
Ask the designer to document wall substrates and fixing capacities against anticipated artwork loads. Heavy pieces may need backing or dedicated supports rather than standard plasterboard fixings.
How much access is needed for artwork deliveries?
Measure the largest anticipated packed artwork against every opening along the delivery route, including lift doors. Tight corners and changes in floor level need checking before the layout is fixed.
