This 1960s Grey Lynn dwelling was previously used as a vehicle servicing premises. The brief for the new design was to convert it into an upmarket gallery and artists’ residence. A commercial fit-out was required with a simple and functional construction process.
The building required 100 per-cent refurbishment.
The challenge was stripping the building back to its basic structure to create volume as well as to conceal a significant upgrade in soundproofing, specialist lighting, security, and other systems designed to showcase artists’ works.
The Two Rooms Gallery has become one of Auckland’s prominent art galleries and represents leading New Zealand artists and artists of international renown.
Architect: Kerry Morrow.
