With their blend of functionality and aesthetic appeal, barn doors bring a unique charm to any space, offering both style and practicality. Whether you're looking to add a touch of farmhouse elegance to your living room, maximise space in a small apartment, or create a stunning focal point in your home, barn doors provide versatile solutions that are as beautiful as they are practical.
To understand how barn doors can transform your interior, we spoke to barn door expert, Phoebe Bonniface from Superior Doors. Phoebe shared some exciting details regarding the imminent release of Superior Doors’ Mackenzie range of barn doors and revealed her top tips on choosing the perfect design for your needs.
The benefits of barn doors
Barn doors are a timeless classic that are seeing a popular return; they’re an excellent option for closing off a space or adding an aesthetic statement piece, shares Bonniface.
“With constraints on floor space in modern housing, barn doors are a popular and eye-catching alternative to standard sliding doors.”
A traditional barn door is constructed from timber, by specialist joiners – a time-consuming and expensive process. However, Superior Doors’ Mackenzie range of barn doors are manufactured from modern composite materials, meaning customers are able to get the same look, feel, and quality for a fraction of the outlay.
“Our Mackenzie range of barn doors are designed to be aesthetically pleasing, but are much more readily customisable than traditional timber joinery. We are able to offer a large range of designs for these doors without impacting their structural integrity.”
When considering a barn door for a space, it’s important to consider what purpose the door is going to serve.
“Is the intention of the barn door to partition a room, to maximise floor space, to create a bold centrepiece, or to address a continuing theme throughout your architectural vision?”
Once you’ve ascertained its purpose, you can choose from the many designs available. These include traditional tongue and groove-style surfaces for classic or rustic spaces, or flat-panelled options for contemporary interiors.
Customisable with the many hardware options available, from face-mounted barn-style hardware to the more discreet and traditional top-mounted options, barn doors can add charm and practicality to any space.
Made strong to last
Some spaces present additional challenges for barn doors. In particular, the forces generated on doors in environments with high moisture levels – such as bathrooms or laundries – or spaces that see a lot of sunshine, can cause doors to bow or warp. However, Superior Doors has addressed these issues in its Mackenzie range of barn doors with the introduction of steel reinforcing, leveraging more than a decade of experience with the use of steel in its market-leading steel reinforced cavity and surface sliding doors, ensuring maximum structural integrity.
“We utilise custom-made steel in the design of our Mackenzie range of barn doors, which provides a higher performance option. Steel-reinforced barn doors are a New Zealand-first, perhaps world-first, ensuring that the doors do not warp or bow,” says Bonniface.
“Our dedicated team of engineers extensively researched, and meticulously tested, various reinforcing materials to ensure the superior standard of durability expected from this new range.”
Sustainability
The construction industry is increasingly pivoting towards the use of sustainable materials and Superior Doors has embraced this wholeheartedly with the development of its Mackenzie range of barn doors.
“Our barn doors don’t compromise on sustainability. Our entire range exclusively uses renewable, FSC-certified, and Eco Choice Aotearoa-accredited materials,” says Bonniface.
Customisation options for barn doors
A number of factors come into play when exploring customisation for barn doors, says Bonniface.
“We are able to customise the dimensions and design of our Mackenzie range of barn doors almost infinitely with our state-of-the-art CNC machines, ensuring the perfect door for every space and interior style – the only limitation is the imagination of our customers.”
