The modern office has shifted. As businesses invest in bringing people back to the workplace, the quality of the built environment matters more than ever. Flooring, walls and finishes are no longer afterthoughts - they are central to conversations about wellbeing, brand identity and the kind of space people genuinely want to spend time in.
Research consistently shows that biophilic design elements, including natural wood, stone and organic textures, boost productivity, creativity, wellbeing and employee satisfaction. For architects and interior designers specifying commercial fitouts, natural stone has emerged as one of the most compelling ways to bring that philosophy to life. It is durable, timeless and carries a sense of permanence that synthetic materials cannot replicate.

The Case for Natural Stone in Commercial Environments
The appeal of natural stone in office design goes well beyond aesthetics. It is a material that performs over time. In high-traffic commercial environments, durability is non-negotiable. Natural stone, when properly sealed and maintained, handles heavy foot traffic without losing its character. Unlike carpet or vinyl, it does not date. A well-specified stone floor or wall installation can outlast multiple fitout cycles, making it a long-term investment rather than a short-term finish.
There is also the question of atmosphere. Natural stone adds warmth and texture to commercial interiors, and when combined with modern finishes, creates spaces that feel both contemporary and connected to nature. In open-plan offices, reception areas and lift lobbies, that quality of feeling grounded and considered is increasingly what tenants and end users are looking for.

60 Martin Place - Sydney CBD
At 60 Martin Place in Sydney’s CBD, Manhattan Limestone Honed was used for both floors and walls across lift lobby spaces on multiple levels. Custom-sized slabs were book-matched between lifts, allowing the stone’s natural grey and white variation to flow across the surfaces. The result was so well received that multiple tenants chose to extend the stone into their own office spaces, creating a seamless transition from shared corridor to private workspace.

At Transurban’s headquarters in the Sydney CBD, designed by Bates Smart and shortlisted for the NSW Architecture Awards, Ocean Grey Granite in a honed finish, was custom-sized into elongated strips to form a feature installation that anchored the interior, showcasing the stone’s rich tones and intricate veining. As the design team noted, the use of natural stone evoked a strong sense of place while the material’s rich tones and veining fostered an engagement with nature throughout the workspace.

For the Allen’s Law Firm fitout in the Sydney CBD, a bold material decision set the tone for the entire space. Coliseum Striato Vein Cut Travertine was laid upside down and lightly sanded to achieve a specific tone and texture, turning what could have been a conventional office floor into something that reads almost like an art installation. The project shows how natural stone, when approached creatively, can become a defining feature rather than a background material.

Closer to home, Sareen Stone’s own Artarmon Studio, transformed in 2025 by Sidgreaves and Co, demonstrates the material in a working commercial context. A curated selection of our limestone range has been installed underfoot in defined zones, allowing each finish and tone to be experienced side by side, while Cathedral Crazy Paving introduces a more relaxed, organic expression. A multi-textured stone feature wall and considered display islands complete the space, creating an environment where architects, designers and homeowners can experience natural stone as it truly lives and performs.
Designed for Longevity
The shift toward biophilic design and material honesty in commercial architecture is not a short-term trend. Materials once specified primarily for prestige are now being assessed for durability, embodied carbon and their contribution to a quieter, more tactile and architecturally resolved interiors. Natural stone responds to all of these considerations.
For architects and designers working across commercial projects, the conversation has moved beyond whether stone belongs in the workplace. The focus is now on how it is specified – the selection of material, finish and format – to shape environments that feel considered, enduring and connected to their context.
