Aluminium cladding is fast becoming the top choice for builders and homeowners alike, offering benefits like durability, fire safety, and cost savings, all while simplifying the construction process.
If you’ve been following trends in building materials, you’ve probably noticed aluminium cladding is quickly becoming the go-to choice for both residential and commercial projects. And it’s easy to see why—aluminium offers a tonne of benefits, from its durability to its stylish versatility. Whether you're an architect, builder, or homeowner, choosing the right cladding material can make all the difference in the final result. Here, we speak to Vulcan’s James Wells about the top five reasons why aluminium cladding is making waves in the construction world.
1. Longevity: Low maintenance & durability
Let’s face it—no one wants to spend their weekends repainting or repairing cladding. That’s one of the biggest selling points of aluminium: it’s built to last and requires very little maintenance. Unlike timber, which can warp, rot, or fade over time, aluminium stands up to everything nature throws at it.
“It’s designed to handle UV exposure, coastal sea spray, and harsh weather without needing repainting or ongoing maintenance,” shares James.
Vulcan’s UltraClad* system is a particularly good example; it’s engineered for high durability and long-lasting appeal, and thanks to its powder-coated finish it will stay sharp for the long term without worrying about constant touch-ups. Plus, because aluminium doesn’t corrode the way other metals might, you’re not left dealing with rust or damage, even in the harshest environments. It’s a smart, long-term solution that’s low maintenance—something we all want from building materials.
2. Faster construction times
In today’s fast-paced construction world, time really is money. Fortunately, aluminium cladding is known for its quick and easy installation process. The Ultraclad system comes pre-engineered for efficiency, which means less on-site fabrication and fewer custom adjustments, leading to faster installation times. The components are designed to fit together seamlessly, with fewer steps and less room for error.
“UltraClad features made-to-fit extrusions, with almost no custom fabrication work,” shares James. “Everything lines up straight, with a simple single bracket hidden fix.”
The added advantage of this streamlined system is that it also requires very limited training hours for builders using it, due to its easy installation.
The result? You can expect quicker project timelines and less money spent on labour.
3. Fire safety benefits
Fire safety is a huge concern, especially for buildings in high-risk areas. One of the standout benefits of aluminium cladding is its fire resistance. Aluminium is naturally non-combustible, meaning it won’t catch fire or contribute to the spread of flames, unlike timber or some composite materials. This makes it a safer option for residential and commercial buildings alike, especially in regions prone to wildfires or in urban areas where building codes are strict.
More and more cladding systems are being tested for fire compliance, and products like UltraClad have been rigorously tested to meet fire safety standards. From meeting the BC C3 external fire spread requirements to being independently tested by Vulcan on its performance under intense bushfire conditions, systems like these are built to ensure your property stays safe.
4. Faster consent times
Anyone who’s worked on a building project knows that getting all the proper approvals can sometimes feel like a never-ending battle. The beauty of aluminium cladding systems, especially fully integrated ones, is that they simplify the consent process. Systems like UltraClad come complete with everything you need for a project—weatherboards, trims, brackets, and even corner moulds—all designed to fit together effortlessly. This kind of all-in-one setup makes the approval process a lot smoother and quicker.
“For architects, it’s a game-changer. UltraClad is a fully integrated system that simplifies installation and significantly reduces overall costs,” says James.
With fewer moving parts to coordinate, the risk of delays decreases significantly. The streamlined system ensures the design meets building code requirements right out of the gate, speeding up the overall process. Faster consents mean faster builds, and that’s always a win.
5. Cost-effective choice
When it comes to choosing building materials, cost-effectiveness is always a major factor. While the initial investment in aluminium cladding is similar to alternatives like timber, the long-term savings are undeniable. Aluminium is durable, and thanks to its resistance to weathering and corrosion, you won’t be looking at frequent repairs or replacements down the line. This makes it a smart financial choice for the future.
Systems that come with all necessary components, like UltraClad, offer additional savings. With everything you need packaged together, there’s no need to shop around for different suppliers or spend time customising pieces to fit. This integrated approach not only saves time during installation but also reduces overall project costs. Plus, the low maintenance factor ensures that you're not stuck with hefty upkeep costs over the years, keeping things budget-friendly in the long haul.
