Renovating a home is both exciting and daunting, balancing what you want out of your space whilst keeping functionality and durability at the forefront of your mind.

Timelines, budget restrictions and navigating permits are also factors that need to be considered, so putting your trust in an industry expert is imperative to ensuring a smooth and successful renovation.

Timelines & Budgets
Two of the most critical aspects to consider in your home renovation are timelines and costs. Although all factors are completely dependent on the size of the project, “a typical bathroom renovation takes about 3-4 weeks,” explains Leif. This timeframe involves coordination between various subcontractors, from plumbers to electricians, gib stoppers and painters, as well as, of course, the builders.
Estimated costs are also closely tied to understanding these timelines. “A good way to get a guideline is to engage with the builder early,’ advises Leif. “The builder can then give some guidance on who to talk to and some cost indications early before it proceeds too far and the drawings are completed for work that might not happen. Talking to the right people is the best.”
“Renovations are a great way to add value and practicality to an existing home, especially if you love where you live.”
Navigating Permits and Approvals
Depending on the scope of your renovation, you may need to obtain permits or consent from the local Council. These approvals are designed to ensure that your renovation complies with building codes, zoning laws and safety standards. For smaller, less invasive projects such as cosmetic upgrades or minor repairs, this isn’t always required. However, for more substantial renovations, especially ones that involve structural changes such as plumbing, electrical work or extensions to the home, typically require consent because they can affect the integrity of the building, the safety of the occupants and its surrounding environment. “Engaging with a builder early in the process can provide valuable guidance on whether your project will need any formal approvals before starting,” says Leif.

Trends in Home Design and Renovation
Staying up-to-date with the latest trends can elevate the outcome of your renovation and help you find your desired aesthetic. Whether you’re looking to modernise your living room, enhance functionality or simply an aesthetic refresh, understanding the current trends is essential. “Looking through magazines, Pinterest and online is helpful for ideas,” advises Leif. “Also, going to showrooms or show homes are other great ways to see what’s in vogue.” Whether it’s modern minimalism, rustic charm or eco-friendly designs that you desire, there’s a trend to suit every taste, keeping your home up to date and, if done right, timeless.
Eco-Friendly and Sustainable Options
Speaking of trends, sustainability is one that’s here to stay. As awareness of environmental issues grows, more homeowners are seeking ways to make their homes more eco-friendly. This can involve using recycled materials such as wood offcuts or recycled materials and implementing energy-efficient systems such as solar panels, LED lighting and more. Leif explains that “keeping waste to a minimum is the best way to be eco-friendly. This can be done in multiple ways, such as keeping measurements to sheet sizes of materials and incorporating smart features into your home, also saving on power and monitoring your home.”
